"I think it is all a matter of love:
the more you love a memory,
the stronger and stranger it is."

-Vladimir Nabokov, "Strong Opinions"

Descansos or roadside memorials are a kind of funerary folk art, with some of the more impressive memorials i might even go as far as calling it naive death art.

this site is a work in progress...it will never be finished unless the grieving stop remembering.

the state of texas now has an unofficial policy on "cracking down" on roadside memorials, claiming that they are roadside destractions. the state of texas has "generously" decided that what loved ones may do now is purchase a memorial plaque, for $10.
some of the roadside memorials that i have up have been destroyed by the police and the other city workers, so if you go by.. do not be surprised to see that the descanso is gone, or much smaller (as that loved ones will come back and re-do the work).

i have half-heartedly called this effort the antigone project.

(the only links working are the ones with *'s in front of them)

if you have any info on other roadside memorials or descansos
that ought to put up here,
please let me know
