'Phillips!...get fell in...over there with the F's!'
Remember those immortal words? Of course you do, even after fifty years or so. I first heard them at RAF Padgate in 1952 and even more so at RAF Hednesford a few days later, after being kitted-out. Remember RAF Hednesford, was it 'Stalag Luft 111' we called it? Nine weeks we spent 'bashing that square', throwing a Lee Enfield about and polishing our brasses and everything else in sight! Then at last came the 'passing-out parade' and a blissful week of leave before moving on to trade-training.
RAF Yatesbury was my next port of call, where did you get to?
Come with me and take a short flight on the old, but magnificent Spitfire 'ticking-over' below and fly back fifty years or so to that never-to-be-forgotten period in our lives.
