Home Hay Pellets Veggies How Much to Feed

How Much to Feed

Hay should be fed in unlimited quantities. Hay is very important in the guinea pig diet as it helps to wear down their ever growing teeth. If you choose to feed pellets, use something that measures (or is equivalent to) 15 ml. Guinea pigs will eat about 30ml to 60ml. When feeding pellets, you will need to feed 1 cup of vegetables. If you don't feed vegetables, two to two and a half cups per guinea pig should be fed.

Supplements

Guinea pigs rarely ever need supplements. This is usually only needed by special needs cavies. People ask a lot about salt. Most pellet feeds have salt in them and do not need to be supplemented any further. If you don't feed pellets, about 5ml (a teaspoon I think) of pellets should suffice. When you use such a small amount of pellets, it's best to share with a friend. If you can't do this, like all other supplements regardless of the animal, you should cunsult your cavy savvy veterinarian. Coat enhancers are more of a material thing and have fatty ingrediants that will most likely do more harm than good. I do not suggest you use any kind of supplement unless 100% necessary.

Feeding Tips

Feeding When You're Away

When you're away on vacation or unable to feed your cavy, have your cavies feed already measured out for each feeding interval. Pellets should be bagged and placed near the cage and clearly labled with feeding instructions. (Very helpful with multiple cavies) Bag premeasured and rinsed veggies and lable the bags 'DAY' or 'NIGHT' and store them in the refrigerater. I like to have a few day's worth of veggies prepared like this in case of an emergency with intrustions of how much to feed in case the veggies go bad or run out and a list of resorces of guinea pig care and where to find a list of daily routines.
