Using the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,” students will be encouraged to see themselves as the leaders of their own destinies, to have a clearer vision of their goals, and to work towards those goals through organization and planning. “Using Digital Photography to Chronicle Laboratory Experiences” – Masco High School (Deborah Markos, 9th grade science). As students do hands-on lab experiments, their work will be chronicled with a digital camera, enabling a PowerPoint review for each unit. Students can review key curriculum concepts before semester exams and MCAS. “SERT First Aid/CPR Training” – Masco High School (Greg West). Several students will be trained as first aid and CPR instructors. These trainers will teach 2 classes per month to teachers, coaches, middle and high school students, and the general public of the Tri-Town communities. “AIDS Memorial Quilt” – Masco High School (Donna Cameron, health). Twenty large panels from the AIDS memorial quilt will be brought to Masco for viewing by students and other Tri-Town residents. HIV-positive speakers from the Boston Living Center will come into the health classes to explain the seriousness of this disease. Boxford “Picture Books from Big Kids to Little Kids”– Cole and Masco High School (Susan Carson, instructional technology specialist, Masco; Deborah Gaillard, library media specialist, Cole; Patricia Puglisi, early childhood education teacher, Masco; Candyce Wainwright, technology integration coordinator, Cole). Students taking Early Education classes at Masco will create story books for children, keeping in mind what they know about how children learn and what topics children enjoy. The books will be scanned, printed, and bound, and shared with the Cole School. “Ceramic Tile Mural” – Spofford Pond School (Principal Barbara Wotherspoon and Pauline Boudreau, art specialist). Students will work with a professional ceramicist to help create a wall mural made up of hundreds of individual clay tiles. The students will create and design tiles, and glaze them after they have been fired in a kiln. “Family tiles” can also be created on Family Night. The mural will be on permanent display. “Nature’s Hot Tub” – Spofford Pond (Grade 6 teachers: Susan Robinson, Joyce Rains, Kim Economos-Smith). Students will study and certify vernal pools in Boxford, identifying animals (frogs, salamanders, snakes, turtles, insects) and plants (trees, shrubs, wildflowers) around vernal pools. Students will also monitor water depth and pH level over an extended period of time. Middleton “Howe-Manning Herald” – Howe Manning (Heidi Emmons, grade 5 teacher). Students will publish a newspaper six times during the academic year. Each issue will contain material created by students: news, editorials, book & movie reviews, cartoons, contests, etc. Students will participate in the planning, writing, editing, proofreading, layout and design, and photography. “Kiln for Howe-Manning” – Howe Mannning (Meredith Laverty, art teacher). Students will use inexpensive kiln-fired clay and be introduced to sculpting techniques, including coiling, slab construction, pinch pots, casting, and molding. Topsfield “The Power of Visuals” – Steward School (Susan O’Brien, kindergarten teacher). Student lessons will be reinforced with curriculum-oriented age-appropriate educational videos, in subject areas such as science (seasons, environment, animals), math (addition, subtraction, time), language arts (phonics, alphabet), safety and social skills, and literature. “Reading Rods” – Steward School (Grade 1 teachers: Diane Lucchesi, Emily Contrada, Tracey Vinson, Kathleen Cronin, Caroline Shugrue, Michelle Foster). Students will use color-coded kits (containing rods, activity flip books, and trays) to learn specific literacy skills, such as phonemic awareness, word building, spelling patterns, grammar, and sentence formation. “Take Home Math Bags” – Steward School (Grade 3 teachers: Paula Klipfel, John Deveney, Linda Osburn, Wendy Serrano, Marianne Healey, Janelle Leonard). Students will explore specific math concepts (multiplication, fractions, measurement, etc.) at home using a canvas carry bag containing literature on the topic, a notebook for recording student’s reflections, and various manipulatives with directions. “Ancient Cultures Museum” – Proctor School (Melanie Sandman, Doreen Kelleher, Amy Clemens, Chris Trombley, Larry MacElhiney). This program addresses bullying as a whole-school effort, supporting teachers and parents in their efforts to make schools safe and respectful. Included are video-based lessons for class discussions, and materials for parents. “Turning Students on to Algebra” -- Howe-Manning School (from Judy Church for Grade 4 Math teachers). The board game Equate is similar to the board game Scrabble, and encourages positive math experiences for those who “hate” math.
