“A-Wing Café” – Masco Middle School (Susan Micus, health teacher).  Students may reserve a supervised room at lunchtime, for friendship gatherings, birthday parties, or special activities.  Party food may be dropped off early, and a take-out menu is available for those wishing to have food delivered.  A CD player/boom box will be available.

“Setting a Tolerant Tone” – Masco Middle School (Kristen Doe, Dorothy Flaherty, and Susan Micus, Health; Rob Beardsall, Diane Frampton, Jessica Goldberg, and Connie Mosher, Guidance; and Asst. Principal Paul Harrington).  Students will attend a social issues theatre performance of “Resolving Rage.”  Using music and theatrical techniques, the performer provides students with tools to deal with peer pressure, anger, and the frustrations of school.

“A Gift for the Teenage Soul” – Masco High School (Donna Cameron, health).  Using the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,” students  will be encouraged to see themselves as the leaders of their own destinies, to have a clearer vision of their goals, and to work towards those goals through organization and planning.

“Using Digital Photography to Chronicle Laboratory Experiences” – Masco High School (Deborah Markos, 9th grade science).  As students do hands-on lab experiments, their work will be chronicled with a digital camera, enabling a PowerPoint review for each unit.  Students can review key curriculum concepts before semester exams and MCAS.

“SERT First Aid/CPR Training” – Masco High School (Greg West).  Several students will be trained as first aid and CPR instructors.  These trainers will teach 2 classes per month to teachers, coaches, middle and high school students, and the general public of the Tri-Town communities.

“AIDS Memorial Quilt” – Masco High School (Donna Cameron, health). Twenty large panels from the AIDS memorial quilt will be brought to Masco for viewing by students and other Tri-Town residents. HIV-positive speakers from the Boston Living Center will come into the health classes to explain the seriousness of this disease.

Boxford

“Picture Books from Big Kids to Little Kids”
– Cole and Masco High School (Susan Carson, instructional technology specialist, Masco; Deborah Gaillard, library media specialist, Cole; Patricia Puglisi, early childhood education teacher, Masco; Candyce Wainwright, technology integration coordinator, Cole).  Students taking Early Education classes at Masco will create story books for children, keeping in mind what they know about how children learn and what topics children enjoy.  The books will be scanned, printed, and bound, and shared with the Cole School.

“Ceramic Tile Mural” – Spofford Pond School (Principal Barbara Wotherspoon and Pauline Boudreau, art specialist).  Students will work with a professional ceramicist  to help create a wall mural made up of hundreds of individual clay tiles.  The students will create and design tiles, and glaze them after they have been fired in a kiln.  “Family tiles” can also be created on Family Night.  The mural will be on permanent display.

“Nature’s Hot Tub” – Spofford Pond (Grade 6 teachers:  Susan Robinson, Joyce Rains, Kim Economos-Smith).  Students will study and certify vernal pools in Boxford, identifying animals (frogs, salamanders, snakes, turtles, insects) and plants (trees, shrubs, wildflowers) around vernal pools.  Students will also monitor water depth and pH level over an extended period of time.

Middleton

“Howe-Manning Herald”
– Howe Manning (Heidi Emmons, grade 5 teacher).  Students will publish a newspaper six times during the academic year.  Each issue will contain material created by students:  news, editorials, book & movie reviews, cartoons, contests, etc.  Students will participate in the planning, writing, editing, proofreading, layout and design, and photography.

“Kiln for Howe-Manning” – Howe Mannning (Meredith Laverty, art teacher).  Students will use inexpensive kiln-fired clay and be introduced to sculpting techniques, including coiling, slab construction, pinch pots, casting, and molding.

Topsfield

“The Power of Visuals”
–  Steward School (Susan O’Brien, kindergarten teacher).  Student lessons will be reinforced with curriculum-oriented age-appropriate educational videos, in subject areas such as science (seasons, environment, animals), math (addition, subtraction, time), language arts (phonics, alphabet), safety and social skills, and literature.

“Reading Rods” – Steward School (Grade 1 teachers:  Diane Lucchesi, Emily Contrada, Tracey Vinson, Kathleen Cronin, Caroline Shugrue, Michelle Foster).  Students will use color-coded kits (containing rods, activity flip books, and trays) to learn specific literacy skills, such as phonemic awareness, word building, spelling patterns, grammar, and sentence formation.

“Take Home Math Bags” – Steward School (Grade 3 teachers:  Paula Klipfel, John Deveney, Linda Osburn, Wendy Serrano, Marianne Healey, Janelle Leonard).  Students will explore specific math concepts (multiplication, fractions, measurement, etc.) at home using a canvas carry bag containing literature on the topic, a notebook for recording student’s reflections, and various manipulatives with directions.

“Ancient Cultures Museum” – Proctor School (Melanie Sandman, Doreen Kelleher, Amy Clemens, Chris Trombley, Larry MacElhiney).  Students will create projects and artifacts, and write stories, poetry, letters, and myths, about ancient civilizations (China, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Mesopotamia), then create a museum of their work.

“Improving Our Executive Skills” – Proctor School (Larry MacElhiney, Doreen Kelleher, Melanie Sandman, Gyoengyi Quinn, David Pruden, Kerry Kaplon).  Students will learn a variety foundation skills, including organization and test-taking strategies, how to retain information for future use, time management techniques, effective work habits, how to conduct research, and efficient use of reference materials.
2002 Grants - $28,000+

Tri-Town Elementary Schools

“Around the World in 180 Days” -- Steward School (from Grade 3 teachers:  Paula Klipfel, John Deveney, Linda Osburn, Wendy Serrano, Marianne Healey, Janelle Leonard).  Each student will make a passport at the beginning of the school year.  Each week, students will have an opportunity to earn a sticker for their passport by answering a geography-related question.

“Building Bridges through Reading”
-- Spofford Pond School (for grades 2 & 3; from Principal Barbara Wotherspoon and Curriculum Coordinator Mary Mann).  Spofford will welcome visiting second-grade students with a keepsake book, “Where the River Begins.”  The book  will be part of the social studies and science curriculum when the students become third-graders at Spofford.

“Fiesta!  Mexican Week”
-- Howe-Manning School and Fuller Meadow Schools (for grades K through 6; from teachers Emily Clarke and Carolyn Colby).  Fiesta will be a weeklong look at the Mexican culture.  Students will read and write Mexican literature and poetry; learn Mexican music and dance; sample Mexican food; and learn about Mexico’s history, climate, geography, government, etc.

“The Natural Classroom”
-- Howe-Manning School (from Heidi Emmons).  Behind the school, a gardening area with benches will serve as an outdoor classroom for students and teachers.  Included will be a small pond, bird feeders, flowering plants, and a greenhouse.

“Project Respect” -- Spofford Pond School (from Principal Barbara Wotherspoon; Robert Sparkes, Physical Education teacher, and Meredith Massarro, Guidance Counselor).  This program addresses bullying as a whole-school effort, supporting teachers and parents in their efforts to make schools safe and respectful.  Included are video-based lessons for class discussions, and materials for parents.

“Turning Students on to Algebra”
-- Howe-Manning School (from Judy Church for Grade 4 Math teachers).  The board game Equate is similar to the board game Scrabble, and encourages positive math experiences for those who “hate” math.  Students arrange tiles in vertical or horizontal math equations, requiring computing and strategic thinking.

Masconomet Regional Middle and High Schools

“Biomusic” -- Masco Middle School (from Donna-Marie Ryan, Life Science teacher).  The “theory of multiple intelligences” outlines eight distinct intelligences, one of which is “musical intelligence.”  Students will be able to tap into their “musical intelligence” to learn basic biology concepts.   Some students find jingles and songs easier to remember than note cards.

“Decisions, Decisions:  A Process that Promotes Safe Choices” -- Masco Middle School (from Susan Micus, Grade 7 teacher).  Computer simulations and role-playing help students develop critical thinking skills.  Students are given a simulated problem based on real-life situations, such as a town dealing with prejudice or violence in the media.  They decide what actions to take, enter it into the computer, then review the consequences of their decision.

“Having Fun with Algebraic Thinking” -- Masco Middle School (from Patricia Bryan, Grade 7 Math teacher).  Students will refine math skills and investigate math concepts using hands-on activities, classroom games, puzzles, “game sheets,” and other enjoyable learning methods.

“Dramatic Performance about Substance Abuse by The Improbable Players” -- Masco Middle School (from Rob Beardsell, Guidance Counselor).  Professional actors (who are also recovering alcoholics and addicts) perform scenes about peer pressure, drinking, smoking, marijuana, etc.  Each performance is followed by a question-and-answer period.

“Masco Online Blackboard”
-- Masco Middle and High Schools (from Mary Mahoney, Special Curriculum Projects, on behalf of MARC, Masconomet Action Research Committee).   Students can access worksheets, handouts, practice tests, and other materials posted online by teachers.   Students and teachers may also access the discussion boards and “chat rooms” in a secure, self-contained system.

“RAD Training” -- Masco Middle and High Schools (from Greg West).  Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Training is a 16-hour course taught to women of all ages to prepare them to protect themselves in the event of a sexual assault.  Due to an overwhelming response for more courses to be offered, another person will be trained as an instructor.

“Team Jason Online” -- Masco Middle School (from Team 7 Blue teachers:  Maureen Butler, English; Tom Cobb; World Cultures; Ryan King, Life Sciences; and Courtney Monaco, Math).  “Rainforests at the Crossroads” is an interdisciplinary unit on the tropical rainforests of Panama.  Via satellite or Internet, students will be able to observe and converse with real scientists as they make their way into uncharted territory within the Panamanian rainforest.

“Yellow Dress” -- Masco High School (from Donna Cameron, Health Educator).  A dramatic one-woman play based on the stories of young women who were victims of dating violence.  A facilitated discussion immediately follows the performance.

“Young Adult Literature” -- Masco Middle School (from Lynda McGraw, Grade 7 English teacher).  Students will read the novel Hoot, a Newbury Honor Book which deals with environmental and social/peer pressure.  The novel will be used to teach literary devices, plot, and appreciation of literature, and tie to other content areas of science and human cultures.
