SPORADES ISLANDS - Meaning the scattered
The group consist of four main islands: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skiros and numerous smaller, uninhabited ones. Good weather records and sufficent water supply made them amongst the greenest islands in Greece. The northern winds cool down the summer heat over the Sporades and all the islands offer good protection against the "Meltemi-Winds".
Here again, the villages were an easy prey for fierce occupants and pirates. The unfortunate population was forced to retreat inland and build fortifications on hilltops after 1850, when life became more stabilized, the locals left their retreats and returned to the coast where they constructed villages in a very particular popular style.
The four main islands have good alongside berthing and supply facilities. They can be perfect retreats, but you won't be dissapointed if you prefer a disco evening, have a fashionable dinner or stay over night in an excellent hotel.
"Just as you like it!"
