| Dragons forever... Dragon (dragǦn) n. 1. a mythical monster, usually represented as a large reptile with wings and claws, breathing fire and smoke 2. a fierce person; esp., a fiercely watchful female guardian/chaperon 3. a large serpent or snake 4. any of a genus (Draco) of small tree lizards of SE Asia, with winglike membranes used in gliding from tree to tree 5. the constellation Draco. Interesting Dragon Facts: *Aristotle once said that apples give dragons indigestion, which they cure by eating wild lettuce. *Dragons have many names, and are also called by Wyrm, Wyvern, serpent, snake, lung, 'Scorpion of the Earth', fire-tongue, etc. *Not all dragons have wings. In the East, they are seen as large snake-like creatures with tendrils and claws that bring rain and good luck. Many stories focus on a dragon and it's pearl, which is one of the greatest treasures. *Not all creatures considered to be dragon-like look much like each other as well. Nearly every part of the world has a certain kind of dragon and a strong history of folktales including serpent dragons, serpent whales, kitchi-at'husis and the giant leech, the piasa, quetzalcoatl, basilisk, cockatrice, long-necks and sea lizards/serpents, the Lambton worm, Mordiford wyvern, and Wantley dragon of Great Britain, the winged serpents of Wales, amphipteres, jormungander, Fafnir, the Lindorm king, and the Midgard serpent of Scandinavia, the tatzelworm, the dragonet of Mount Pilatus, guivres and gargouilles (gargoyles) of France, the tarasque, the peluda, the dragon of Poseidon and the Lernaean hydra of Greece, the salamander, the pyrallis, Leviathan, Marduk and Tiamat, the sirrush, the Carthaginian serpent giant, 'Mokele-mbembe' of central Africa, the dragon deities of China and Japan, Komodo, and the bunyip. *A dragon or snake creating a circle by biting it's tail is known as a symbol called 'ouroboros' This area is dedicated to one of my favorite creatures...the dragon. Philosophy, reference, images, and more...mostly philosophy. I can't explain why I love them so much - perhaps their mystical qualities, or their spiritual hold on us. Dragons are power, but power controlled. Wrapped tightly into a sleek body that has been both awed and feared, their very form speaking of confinement to the Earth, yet their wings carrying them higher than any creature dare dream. It's what they represent that fascinates me so much, especially as they are represented in so many ways all over the world. That's what's so great about them - that there is no wrong way to portray one (although the close-minded views of them tend to be frustrating). As the information below shows, the only limit is your imagination......this is not meant to be a 'one-stop' guide or an archive as I lack the space needed, simply a collection of the more interesting things I've found, and a launching pad to begin your own search... Suggestions for content is welcomed as this area is far from finished.
