Hi,
I do not have the Garvis line down to mine in the computer but I will send it by e-mail in "installments" It is on the World Family Tree website. Someone sent it to me--all 89 pages of it, but my computer deleted the letter. Isn't that all ways the way it happens.

I was asking about Samuel III's father Samuel, Jr. because no one seems to have any info on him. All I have found is his name in Samuel Gilbert of Bedford Co. will and place and date of his death--Madison Co, OH ca 1852/54.

I was hoping you had some info on his children. I have traced my family back to Russell Co. as early as 1793--Russ Co Tax list through 1807- John Gilbert On 1810 RC Tax list is Barbry Gilbert, whom I assume is the widow
of John Gilbert.

The only connection of John to the Joseph Gilbert killed by Indians in 1792 is John's Petition in RC for the settlement of his estate. I cannot even document a tie of my Joseph Gilbert b. 1795 to John. I do have oral family history that they were Old Joe's parents.

On the 1820 Russell Co Census were:

Joseph Gilbert (New Garden)(16-26)this would have been my Joe

Joseph Gilbert (26-45) m. Mary "Polly" Vicars He was the son of Joseph
Hiram Gilbert who came to Russ. Co. from TN, moved back there and then to Lee Co, VA

Benjamin Gilbert (26-45) m. Levisa Hunt He was son of Samuel Gilbert, III. He also, moved to Lee Co. as I guess you already know.

Sam's son John Gilbert was in Tazewell Co, Va as late as 1814. He m. Sarah Tabor and they moved to KY.

Then there are no other Gilberts in Russell Co area except my Joseph's family as far as I know.

Here is what I have on Joe.

The will of Samuel Gilbert (m. Martha Webster)
is on the Rootsweb Bedford Co, VA page.
If you don't know the site, just search for USGENWEB.

This is the story of Joseph Gilbert.

In 1792 Major Robert Crockett of Wythe Co assembled a group of about forty men to pursue Indians that were attacking the small settlements in the area and stealing horses.
During their pursuit, they ran short of supplies, so he split his men into small parties to search for game for food.

Two of these men were Joseph Gilbert and Samuel Lusk. While hunting, they encountered a small band of Indians and a battle ensued. Samuel Lusk was shot in the hand. He sickened and kept fainting due to loss of blood.
Gilbert kept fighting, but Lusk begged him to leave him and run for safety. Gilbert refused. He said he had promised Lusk's mother to look out for him.
The Indians finally got close enough to knock Gilbert down with their tomahawks. They scalped Gilbert and took Lusk prisoner. They headed down Guyandotte Rive and into the Ohio River Valley. Lusk later escaped and was able to give this report.

Lusk m. Sarah Bailey in Tazewell Co, VA and later moved To Lee Co, VA.
He said that he and Gilbert had been lifelong friends.

When I searched for Lusks in Russ., Tazewell etc. before 1800, I found none.
I checked backward from Wash., Wythe, Bedford --
on the 1782 Taxlist of Wash. Co. was Adam Lusk, neighbor to two Samuel Gilberts---which must have been Sam, JR and Sam, III as Sam m. Martha Webster died in 1776.

Samuel Gilbert, III must have lived in Russ. Co also, because Benjamin gave his own birth as 1791 Russ Co.
Sam was not listed on taxlists for Russ Co--don't know about Tazewell. Haven't had access to it.

According to Lusk's petition for a pension he would have been 16 years old in 1792. Joseph Gilbert must have been some older--but I don't think he was m. and had a family because none is mentioned in the petition John filed in Russ Co for the settlement of his estate. (This petition is mentioned in
the History of Lee Co)

Another thing that ties these families together is that Samuel Lusk moved to Lee Co near Samuel Gilbert, III.

Samuel Gilbert b. 22 May 1709 m.
Martha Webster on 26 April 1733 in ST George Parish,
Baltimore, MD (Now Harford Co)
Ch:
    1. Mary Gilbert b. 31 March 1734
        m. John Welch Bed. Co.
    2. Samuel Gilbert, Jr. b. 7 March 1736 Balt., MD
        m. Hannah ?
    3. Martha Gilbert b. 8 Aug 1737
    4.  John Webster Gilbert b. 27 Dec 1738
        m. Susannah Bird moved to TN
    5.  Arabelle Gilbert b. 13 Feb 1739/40
    6.  Michael Gilbert b. 19 April 1741
    7.  William Gilbert b. 20 April 1743
    8.  Benjamin Gilbert b.ca 1745/47 m.Hannah Butler 4 Aug 1779 Bedford  Co,VA Benj. moved to Hancock Co, GA
    9. Hannah Gilbert b. ca 1757m. Alexander Gibbs

Joseph Hiram Gilbert was born ca 1752 in Wash. Co.
I believe him to have been the son of Samuel and Martha but I have no documentation and other researchers are skeptical---but he seems to have a tie to his family and there is a space in the births around that time. Only
three of the above sons are in Sam's will so that doesn't mean anything.

Later,
Louise
