Anthony started his actingcareer age 21 when his friend asked Anthony to apply a television course at ATV with him. Anthony got in but his friend failed. One of his classmates were Lau Ching-Wan. After course he signed a contract with them for 2 years. He made his appearance on tv 25 titles for 2 years. Then he went to the Academy of Performaing Arts, where he starred in a number of plays, including Cyrano de Bergerac and Oedipus Rex. After that he went to TVB back to television .
He made his debut in screen in 1986 in a movie Kiss me Goodbye (Lian ai ji jie). In 1982 he got his first nomination in HK film awards for supporting role in Now You See Love, Now You Don't. But he didn't win this time but next year he did win the best actor award from the Untold Strory. Once again last year 1999 he won his second best actor award from the Beast Cops.
Anthony is mostly known from his villain parts like in John Woo's Hard Boiled. Anthony has said afterwards that he was not satisfied working with Woo because he couldn't had enough communication with him. Unlike in the Untold Story where he could exchange his ideas with director Herman Yau.
Anthony has directed himself 2 movies, New Tenant in 1995 and Top Banana Club 1996.
He has made 2 CD's. Soundtrack for the movie New Tenant and his debut song punk CD Underdog Rock, which was classified as Category 3 because of the lyrics.. His band the Gutter was banned in China. Anthony has said that he is not so much interesting in singing but writing lyrics.
Anthony Wong is one of the most talented actors in Hong Kong. When he started his career people saw him as a gweilo because of his background but nowadays he is very respected all over the world. He doesn't want to make a big number of himself. He doesn't want to be called as a star but an actor.. He wants to keep his familylife in secret. You can hear the voice (that is crying) of his son in his CD.
Anthony smokes a cigar after winning the best actor award in 18th HK film awards.
